A new publication from a TIMEleSS student in the European Journal of Mineralogy : Deformation of NaCoF3 perovskite and post-perovskite up to 30 GPa and 1013 K: implications for plastic deformation and transformation mechanism.
Jeff Gay uses a resistively heated diamond anvil to study the plastic deformation and phase transformation mechanisms in NaCoF3. Under ambient pressure, NaCoF3. crystallizes in the perovskite structure, and later transforms to the post-perovskite. It is hence an excellent analogue to understand the physical properties of bridgmanite, the most abundant mineral on Earth, and dominant component of the Earth’s lower mantle between 660 and 2900 km depth.
These results from a collaboration between the Université de Lille, the University of Utah, University College London, and the PETRA III / DESY synchrotron source were published on 30 Sep 2021 in the European Journal of Mineralogy.

TIMEleSS members met virtually in September 2021 to discuss on the transition zone. The meeting was led by Estelle Ledoux, PhD student at the Université de Lille.
The meeting was an occasion for Estelle to present her work, get feedback from the rest of the group, prepare for future collaborations, and get ready for her up-coming PhD defense!
TIMEleSS members met virtually in June 2021 for a virtual meeting on crust subduction. The meeting was led by Matthias Krug, PhD student at WWU Münster, and currently visiting the Université de Lille for 6 months.
The meeting was an occasion for Matthias to present his work and get feedback from the rest of the group.
The 2020 TIMEleSS Annual Meeting was held online on 8-9 September 2020. Members from the Université de Lille (Julien Chantel, Jeffrey Gay, Estelle Ledoux, Sébastien Merkel), the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, Münster (Matthias Krug, Federica Rochira, Morvarid Saki, Angelo Pisconti, Christine Thomas), and the Deutsche GeoForschungsZentrum, Potsdam (Sergio Speziale) met for two half-days to discuss current advances and future plans.
The first day was dedicated to progress report by the PhD students. The second day followed by a scientific presentation by our guest Morvarid Saki and discussions on the geophysical implications of the results.
Despite the 2020 conditions, the TIMEleSS project is nicely moving forward. Students are reaching a stage when they fully interact with each other. The PIs can’t wait for next year with results and publications!
Students from the “Collège Val de la Sensée” in Arleux (Junior High School) are working on a project related to the famous Jules Vernes book Journey to the Center of the Earth.
On Nov. 25, 2019, they came to the Université de Lille for an example of a university class, as Otto Lidenbrock can teach in the Jules Vernes book. S. Merkel gave them a lecture on the Center of the Earth, as scientists view it and study it today, and how Jules Vernes visionary writings were both close and distant from today’s view of the Earth interior.
The second Deep Earth Mini Symposium was held at the Institute for Geophysics of the University of Münster on November 18th 2019.
The one day symposium has presentations from local and international speakers who all came to Münster for a day of science and discussions. The workshop was organized by TIMEleSS PI C. Thomas.
TIMEleSS PI S. Merkel gave a presentation entitled Phase transitions in the lowermost mantle : Effect
on microstructures and seismic reflections. TIMEleSS students F. Rochira and M. Krug presented posters on their most recent works.
The TIMEleSS group is at the PETRA III synchrotron this week-end. Matthias Krug, Estelle Ledoux, Jeff Gay, Julien Chantel, Carmen Sanchez-Valle, Sébastien Merkel, and special guest Anastasiia Zadoia will be spending some time at P02.2…
Two months of sample synthesis, polishing, coating, cutting, and 10 diamond anvil cells loaded.
Nights will be shorts for the next four days. Let’s cross fingers, we need data for our next multigrain diffraction datathon!
The TIMEleSS team is holding its second training session on multigrain diffraction data processing. The session takes place on Feb 11-15 at the Université de Lille, in France. Participants (left to right on the image) include Julien Chantel, our guest Agnès Dewaele, Sébastien Merkel, Jeffrey Gay, Sergio Speziale, Estelle Ledoux, Matthias Krug, and Carmen Sanchez-Valle.
The session is an opportunity for all members to get trained in multigrain diffraction data processing but also to standardize our data workflow strategies.

Members of the TIMEleSS project are spending a few days at the P02.2 beamline of the PETRA III synchrotron in Hamburg. Week-end will be busy and samples will get hot!

Federica Rochira gave her first talk at the Institute of Geophysics in Münster. She presented her part of the TIMEleSS project and the first results about the out-of-plane reflections in the mid-mantle. The seismology group of Münster was present but also Carmen and Matthias of the Institute of Mineralogy, also involved in the TIMEleSS project.
C. Sanchez, C. Thomas, and S. Merkel are in Münster for discussing the outline of the project, laying out the time tables and discuss about hiring of students. More to come soon!
